1Ki 18:17-18 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” (18) And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals.
Evil king Ahab was so typical of wicked people – especially abusers, sociopaths, and narcissists. As we have written here before, the abuser is never to blame. You are. It’s always your fault. Elijah refused to wear that mantle of guilt Ahab threw at him and instead announced who was really at fault for all the troubles the nation was experiencing – it was Ahab.
Ahab, like all revilers and their kind, hated Elijah because Elijah spoke the truth. He pulled away the disguise Ahab wore and confronted him with his evil. Darkness always hates the light. It demands that the light stop shining and exposing. Abusers order their victims to keep quiet and woe to them if they ever speak negatively of the evil one.
In addition, they accuse and blame the victim. You have had this happen to you I suspect. You end up feeling guilty and being tormented, wondering if in fact things really are all your fault. But they aren’t. It is not a sin to speak about sin. To expose it. To shed the light of truth upon an evil person who is hiding behind a fake cloak of righteousness. That is not a sin. Nope. So don’t wear that garment of false guilt.
Elijah was not the troubler of Israel. Ahab was. You are not the troubler of your marriage or other relationship. The abuser is. The narcissist is. And it is no sin to expose it.
Amen!!!
So true.
