Evil Meant for Good

Gen 50:20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

This Sunday I plan to preach on this verse of Scripture which states a truth that will be of great and unusual help to us if we can embrace it by faith, particularly in dark circumstances. It is, of course found in the account of Joseph as ruler in Egypt when his brothers came to him in great fear for the evil they had done to him years before. Sold him into slavery. Made him as dead to their father.

God is sovereign over all. This is God’s world in which all is decreed by Him in eternity past and history is the outworking of that decree. There is no remote corner of the universe where this is not true. He is King of kings over all. And in this, as His children, we must take great comfort:

Rom 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

All things. Including the evil of being sold into slavery in Egypt. Being falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and thrown into prison. You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good. Not just for Joseph, but for the whole world. The famine came, but myriads of lives were saved because Joseph was ruler in Egypt – there was grain for food.

You come to this blog to read about the nature and tactics of RASNs – abusers and narcissists and all the rest. These are wicked, evil people who cause us great harm – great harm. The crave power and control for their own dark purposes, and so often it looks like they ARE in control. Their victims are typically stripped of resources, of friends, of their children to a greater or lesser extent,  even of their own churches. Who can stand against them?

Rev 13:4 And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”

The answer of course is….King Jesus. He is established as Ruler of all and – get this – we reign with Him. He is King on Mount Zion, crowned by the Father and His church reigns with Him. These truths have not yet become fully revealed –

Psa 2:6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

Psa 8:6-9 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, (7) all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, (8) the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. (9) O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good. All the wicked things that are launched at us, every dark motive and scheme, every lie, every arrow fired our way…all is turned by the Father for our good and His glory. It doesn’t look like it, but it is true. And the Day is coming when the whole glorious plan, which the Lord was working out all the time, will become evident. He even has the power to turn evil to our good purpose.
