Let Him Who is Thirsty, Come

Human beings thirst for happiness and fulfillment but most never find it because they are looking for the wrong object and in the wrong way. Christ alone is the living water.

Pastoral Reading

Isaiah 55:1-7

“Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
    and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
    and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
    hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
    my steadfast, sure love for David.
Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
    a leader and commander for the peoples.
Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
    and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
    for he has glorified you.

“Seek the Lord while he may be found;
    call upon him while he is near;
let the wicked forsake his way,
    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
    and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Opening Song

I Sing the Mighty Power of God (CRC #74)

VERSE 1
I sing the mighty power of God, that made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.
sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey.

VERSE 2
sing the goodness of the Lord, that filled the earth with food.
He formed the creatures with His Word, and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how Your wonders are displayed, where’er I turn my eye,
If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky!

VERSE 3
There’s not a plant or flower below, but makes Your glories known,
And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Your throne;
While all that borrows life from You is ever in Your care;
And everywhere that man can be, You, God, are present there.

My Life is an Offering (CRC #23)

Verse 1
This life is an altar
Where I want to offer
My soul and my mind and strength
Cleansed by Your mercy to live a life worthy
Of the One Who called my name

Chorus
Jesus be glorified
Jesus be magnified
Let me be a pleasing sacrifice
Jesus be glorified
Jesus be magnified
Here at the altar
My life is an offering

Verse 2
How could I not love You
You authored my rescue
Raised me up from death to life
Your Spirit is in me revealing Your glory
Oh what joy as I give my life

Bridge
I choose to lose my life Lord
And find it in You
I choose to lose my life Lord
And find it in You

Rock of Ages (CRC #39)

Verse 1
Rock of Ages cleft for me Let me hide myself in thee
Let the water and the blood From thy wounded side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure Save from wrath and make me pure
Rock of Ages cleft for me Let me hide myself in thee

Verse 2
Not the labors of my hands Can fulfill thy law’s demands
Could my zeal no respite know Could my tears forever flow
All for sin could not atone Thou must save and thou alone
Rock of Ages cleft for me Let me hide myself in thee

Verse 3
Nothing in my hand I bring Simply to the cross I cling
Naked come to thee for dress Helpless look to thee for grace
Foul I to the fountain fly Wash me Savior or I die
Rock of Ages cleft for me Let me hide myself in thee

Verse 4
While I draw this fleeting breath When mine eyes shall close in death
When I soar to worlds unknown See thee on thy judgment throne
With Thy righteousness am dressed, Brought into immortal rest
Rock of Ages cleft for me Let me hide myself in thee

Scripture Reading

John 7:1-39

After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews[a] were seeking to kill him. Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. So his brothers[b] said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” For not even his brothers believed in him.Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.You go up to the feast. I am not[c] going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.

14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,[d]when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone’s will is to do God’s[e] will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[f] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Preaching the Word

Let Him Who is Thirsty, Come

John 7:37-39

 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Closing Song

Psalm 138 (Psalter 138A)

With all my heart my thanks I’ll bring,
Before the gods Thy praises sing;
I’ll worship in Thy holy place
And praise Thy name for truth and grace;

For Thou above Thy name adored
Has magnified Thy faithful word.
The day I called Thy help appeared;
With inward strength my soul was cheered.

All kings of earth shall thanks accord
When they have heard Thy words, O LORD;
Jehovah’s ways they’ll celebrate;
The glory of the LORD is great.

Although Jehovah is most high,
On lowly ones He bends His eye;
But those that proud and haughty are
He knoweth only from afar.

Through trouble though my pathway be,
Thou wilt revive and comfort me.
Thine outstretched hand Thou wilt oppose
Against the wrath of all my foes.

Thy hand, O LORD, shall set me free
And perfect what concerneth me;
Thy mercy, LORD, forever stands;
Leave not the work of Thine own lands.
