Man Hears of Hell But Flatters Himself

Everyone expects to go to heaven, but few will ever do so. Sinners demand the gate to be opened to them and offer many reasons it should be.

Pastoral Reading

John 16:4-15

But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Opening Song

Psalm 9:1-10 (PS #9A)

I now will give whole-hearted thanks to the LORD,
And all of Your marvelous works will record.
In You will be glad and exultingly cry.
And praise to Your name will I sing, O Most High

When backward my foes were all turned in despair,
They stumbled and perished because You were there.
For You have defended my judgment and cause;
You sat in just judgment upholding Your laws.

You chided the nations, the wicked destroyed;
Their names You erased and forever made void.
The foe is consumed, is completely erased,
Their cities destroyed and their memory effaced.

The LORD will eternally sit on His throne,
Establishing it for His judgment alone.
In righteousness He’ll judge the word from His seat
And unto all peoples shall equity mete.

The LORD is a stronghold, a lofty strong tower,
For all the oppressed in their troubles’ dark hour.
Those knowing Your name, LORD, trust You for Your grace;
You have not forsaken those seeking Your face.

Worship His holy name
Sing like never before O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger
Your name is great and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending

Where Thou Leadest Me (CRC #75)

Verse 1
Where Thou leadest me, I dare not find complain
For Thou has never left nor will for all my days
Thy presence is my good and it shall ever be
I will go where Thou leadest me
That′s the verse two together

Verse 2
Sovereign is Thy hand to guide me when I’m worn
Thy good and perfect will, holds fast through every storm
What time I am afraid, my faith looks up to Thee
I will trust where Thou leadest me

Chorus
On the mountain high through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me

Verse 3
O Shepherd, keep me near for I am prone to stray
The frailty of my flesh seeks refuge in Thy grace
This promise is my peace, my soul is safe in Thee
I will rest as Thou leadest me

Chorus
On the mountain high through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me
On the mountain high through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me
Ooh-oh-oh

Verse 4
Savior, light my path until that final day
If Thou art Lord of life, why should I fear the grave?
Proud death has lost its sting for all eternity
I will rise where Thou leadest me
Home with Christ where Thou leadest me

Chorus
On the mountain high through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me, oh
On the mountain high through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me

I will go where Thou leadest me

Scripture Reading

Luke 13:22-30

22 He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ 28 In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. 29 And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

Preaching the Word

Man Hears of Hell, but Flatters Himself

Luke 16:19-31

19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”

28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”

Song

Come, O Come, Thou Quickening Spirit (TH #331)

1 Come, O come, thou quick’ning Spirit,
God from all eternity!
May thy power never fail us;
swell within us constantly.
Then shall truth and life and light
banish all the gloom of night.

2 Grant our hearts in fullest measure
wisdom, counsel, purity,
that we ever may be seeking
only that which pleaseth thee.
Let thy knowledge spread and grow,
working error’s overthrow.

3 Show us, Lord, the path of blessing;
when we trespass on our way,
cast, O Lord, our sins behind thee
and be with us day by day.
Should we stray, O Lord, recall;
work repentance when we fall.

4 Holy Spirit, strong and mighty,
thou who makest all things new,
make thy work within us perfect
and the evil foe subdue.
Grant us weapons for the strife
and with vict’ry crown our life.
