The Free Gift that Costs Everything (Pt 7)

The rich young ruler chooses to keep his penny while rejecting the billions in real treasure in heaven. He kept his idol. What might be an idol you need to jettison?

Praise and Prayer

The Works of His Hands

I give thanks to the Lord, Sing Praise to His Name
Declaring His Love in the Morning
For You O Lord, have made me glad
And I sing for joy at the works of Your Hands

The works of His hands, my heart will praise
In the company of His people
Splendour and majesty are my delight
And His goodness endures forever

The works of His hands, His wonders declared
Providing for those who fear Him
Gracious and merciful, is our Lord God
Remembering His cov’nant forever

The works of His hands are faithful and just
Shown through His pow’r to His people
All of His precepts are worthy of trust
And they are established forever

The works of His hands, His promise made firm
Redemption sent to His people
Holy, and Awesome, is His Name!
His praises endure forever

In Christ Alone

Verse 1
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light my strength my song
This Cornerstone this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love what depths of peace
When fears are stilled when strivings cease
My Comforter my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

Verse 2
In Christ alone who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

Verse 3
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

Verse 4
No guilt in life no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

Pastoral Reading

Canons of Dort

Article 1: God’s Right to Condemn All People
Since all people have sinned in Adam and have come under the sentence of the curse and eternal death, God would have done no one an injustice if it had been his will to leave the entire human race in sin and under the curse, and to condemn them on account of their sin. As the apostle says: “The whole world is liable to the condemnation of God” (Rom. 3:19), “All have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23), and “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23).

Article 2: The Manifestation of God’s Love
But this is how God showed his love: he sent his only begotten Son into the world, so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (1 John 4:9; John 3:16).

Opening Hymn

Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken (TH #345)

Glorious things of thee are spoken
Zion, city of our God
He, whose word cannot be broken
Formed thee for His own abode
On the Rock of Ages founded
What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation’s walls surrounded
Thou may’st smile at all thy foes

See, the streams of living waters
Springing from eternal love
Well supply thy sons and daughters
And all fear of want remove
Who can faint, while such a river
Ever flows their thirst to assuage?
Grace which, like the Lord, the giver
Never fails from age to age

Blest inhabitants of Zion
Purchased by the Savior’s blood
Jesus, whom their souls rely on
Makes them kings and priests to God
While in love his Saints he raises
With himself to reign as King
All, as priests, his solemn praises
For thank-off’rings freely bring

Savior, if in Zion’s city
I, through grace, a member am
Let the world deride or pity
I will glory in Thy name
Fading is the sinner’s pleasure
All his boasted pomp and show
Solid joys and lasting treasure
None but Zion’s children know

Hymn

We Have an Anchor (CRC #61)

1 Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

Refrain: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

2 It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,
For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;
And the cables passed from His heart to mine,
Can defy the blast, through strength divine.

3 It will firmly hold in the straits of fear,
When the breakers have told the reef is near;
Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.

4 It will surely hold in the floods of death,
When the waters cold chill our latest breath;
On the rising tide it can never fail,
While our hopes abide within the veil.

Closing Hymn

Lord Dismiss Us With Your Blessing (TH #384)

1. Lord, dismiss us with your blessing;
fill our hearts with joy and peace;
let us each, your love possessing,
triumph in redeeming grace.
Oh refresh us, oh refresh us,
traveling through life’s wilderness.

2. Thanks we give and adoration
for your gospel’s joyful sound;
may the fruits of your salvation
in our hearts and lives abound.
May your presence, may your presence
with us evermore be found,

3. So that when your love shall call us,
Saviour, from the world away,
fear of death shall not appall us,
glad your summons to obey.
May we ever, may we ever
live in you in endless day.
