The Ten Virgins by J.C. Ryle

Christ is coming again! The parable of the 10 Virgins is a call to us to be ready, knowing that He could return at the most unexpected time. Those not prepared will find themselves shut out of the kingdom.

Pastoral Reading

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life,[a] and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Opening Song

The Apostles Creed (TH #741)

Verse 1
In God the Father I believe
Almighty Lord of all
Who made the heavens and the earth
His name be praised in awe
And I believe in Jesus Christ
The Father’s only Son
Conceived by the holy Ghost
Of virgin Mary born

Verse 2
Who suffered when He stood condemned
By Pontius Pilate’s code
Was crucified was dead as He
Himself had long foretold
Our Lord was buried in a tomb
Descended into hell
But on the third day He arose
Again on earth to dwell

Verse 3
Ascending into heaven above
He sits at God’s right hand
From there He shall return to judge
The living and the dead
In God the Spirit I believe
Who guides a holy church
The universal body that
Victorious shall emerge

Verse 4
I do believe that all the saints
Must now commune in love
And that redeemed by Jesus’ blood
Our sins are pardoned us
And at life’s end my body frail
Upraised from earthly strife
Is resurrected and renewed
In everlasting life amen

Song

In Christ Alone (CRC #8)

Verse 1
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light my strength my song
This Cornerstone this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love what depths of peace
When fears are stilled when strivings cease
My Comforter my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

Verse 2
In Christ alone who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

Verse 3
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

Verse 4
No guilt in life no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

Where He Leadeth Me (CRC #75)

Verse 1
Where Thou leadest me
I dare not find complaint
For Thou hast never left
Nor will for all my days
Thy presence is my good
And it shall ever be
I will go where Thou leadest me

Verse 2
Sovereign is Thy hand
To guide me when I’m worn
Thy good and perfect will
Holds fast through every storm
What time I am afraid
My faith looks up to Thee
I will trust where Thou leadest me

Chorus
On the mountain high
Through the vallеy deep
I will go where Thou leadеst me

Verse 3
O Shepherd keep me near
For I am prone to stray
The frailty of my flesh
Seeks refuge in Thy grace
This promise is my peace
My soul is safe in Thee
I will rest as Thou leadest me

Chorus
On the mountain high
Through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me
On the mountain high
Through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me

Verse 4
Savior light my path
Until that final day
If Thou art Lord of life
Why should I fear the grave?
Proud death has lost its sting
For all eternity
I will rise where Thou leadest me
Home with Christ where Thou leadest me

Chorus
On the mountain high
Through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me (oh)
On the mountain high
Through the valley deep
I will go where Thou leadest me
I will go where Thou leadest me

Scripture Reading

Matthew 25:1-13

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps[a] and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Closing Song

Father Long Before Creation (CRC #56)

1 Father, long before creation
you had chosen us in love,
and that love so deep, so moving,
draws us close to Christ above.
Still it keeps us
firmly fixed in Christ alone.

2 Though the world may change its fashion,
you will still remain the same;
your compassion and your cov’nant
through all ages will remain.
Your own children
shall forever praise your name.

3 Your compassion is our story,
is our boasting all the day;
mercy free and never failing
moves our will, directs our way.
God so loved us
that he gave his only Son.

4 Loving Father, now before you
we shall ever sing your grace,
and our song will sound forever
when we see you face to face,
giving glory
to the Lamb upon the throne.
