The Duty of Discernment by Justin Peters
Sunday Service
Pastoral Reading
Psalm 119:1-12
Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
who seek him with their whole heart,
3 who also do no wrong,
but walk in his ways!
4 You have commanded your precepts
to be kept diligently.
5 Oh that my ways may be steadfast
in keeping your statutes!
6 Then I shall not be put to shame,
having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
7 I will praise you with an upright heart,
when I learn your righteous rules.
8 I will keep your statutes;
do not utterly forsake me!
9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord;
teach me your statutes!
Opening Song
All Who, With Heart Confiding (Psalm 125 – PS #71C)
All who, with heart confiding,
Depend on God alone,
like Zion’s mount abiding,
Shall ne’er be overthrown.
Like Zion’s city, bounded
By guarding mountains broad,
His people are surrounded
Forever by their God.
No scepter of oppression
Shall hold unbroken sway,
Let unto base transgression
The righteous turn away.
Thy favor be imparted
To godly men, O Lord;
With mercy never ending
And everlasting peace.
The men who falsehood cherish,
Forsaking truth and right,
With wicked men shall perish;
God will their sin requite.
From sin Thy saints defending,
Their joy, O Lord, increase,
With mercy never ending
And everlasting peace.

How Marvelous, How Wise, How Great (CRC #45)
- How marvelous, how wise, how great,
how infinite to contemplate:
Jehovah’s saving plan.
He saw me in my lost estate,
yet purposed to regenerate
this faithless, fallen man. - Foreknown before the world began,
according to his gracious plan,
God destined I must be
conformed to Jesus Christ, the man,
who lived and loved as no man can:
a glorious decree. - He bore my sin on Calvary’s tree
and righteousness bestowed on me,
that I might see his face.
God justified me, set me free,
and glorified I soon will be:
how marvelous this grace. - What have I now but to embrace
the God who saved me from disgrace
and love him evermore,
and with contentment run my race,
my eyes fixed ever on his face
to praise him and adore.

My Sheep Know My Voice (CRC #57)
1. My sheep hear My voice, and the path that I take,
They follow wherever I go;
My sheep know My voice and come at my call,
But a stranger’s voice do they not know.
Refrain
My sheep know My voice, and day by day
They abide in the fold and go not astray,
They love Me because I have made them my choice,
And they follow My call for My sheep know My voice.
2. My sheep know My voice, and the pastures of green,
Where I lead them so often to feed;
My sheep know My voice and the cool sparkling stream
Where beside its still waters I lead. [Refrain]
3. My sheep know My voice, and the valley of death
Through which I shall lead them some day;
But no danger nor harm can touch one of them,
For I will be with them alway. [Refrain]
Scripture Reading
Psalm 119:97-105
Oh how I love your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,
for it is ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the aged,
for I keep your precepts.
101 I hold back my feet from every evil way,
in order to keep your word.
102 I do not turn aside from your rules,
for you have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through your precepts I get understanding;
therefore I hate every false way.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.
Preaching the Word
Study the Scriptures
John 5:39
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,
How do you read it?
Luke 10:26
He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?”
Closing Song
God’s Sufficient Word (CRC #51)
Believe in God’s inerrant Word,
Inspired and therefore pure.
Continue in the things you’ve learned,
for sacred Truth is sure.
Chorus
Rejoice in God’s delightful Word
That satisfies the soul–
Far sweeter than the honeycomb,
And more desired that gold!
Submit to God’s transforming Word
Which makes the foolish wise.
The living, piercing, healing Sword
Yields righteousness through Christ. Chorus
mature through God’s equipping word,
Until you’re fully grown.
prepared to serve your gracious Lord,
Now work to make Him known. Chorus
Depend on God’s sufficient Word,
Which cannot be improved.
In light of judgment and reward,
Proclaim His changeless Truth. Chorus
